Dusted.

Came up to the summit yesterday for the SNC race team workout, after a week in North Carolina for corporate meetings.  Long flights, long days, and no jogging or fitness room visits (along with general "old guy" syndrome) combined to produce the following story.

The original call was for a classic day on the Summit Nordic upper trails, but after arriving we switched plans quickly to a long-distance skate workout when only Elise, RuthMabel, and Hanne were able to make it up for the session.  With these fast-movers in attendance, it was the perfect day to tackle the Mt. Catherine Loop, going the "uphill" way to Windy Pass, continuing around clockwise to Grand Junction and back down the alpine runs, about a 13.5km loop by my measurements.  We started out at 10:30, skating out through traffic on some dirty snow till we hit the bridge just past the 2km mark to regroup.  I was cruising about 5-10 seconds behind the group, and we waited a minute for Robin Stacy and Dan Miller to catch us.  Robin and Dan decided to head up the Hidden Valley trail and try to meet us somewhere on the upper trails.  Lynne, Rosemary, and Sharon had taken the chairlift up and were going to do the loop in the opposite direction, so we anticipated running into the different groups as we came around the hill.  The race team started up again and we cruised past the HV intersection and the old Yurt spot.  The trail conditions were getting better as we got farther out and gained a little elevation, great surface for skating.  As we skied out to the first switchback the trail starts to go up, and the race group started to open up a gap on me, still skiing at a steady but not all-out pace, as directed.  I watched as they pulled ahead like a bike race breakaway pack, hitting the V1 power side to the right in perfect synchronization, tightly packed, with Hanne and RuthMabel trading spots behind Elise who was setting the pace.

Wow, they looked great!

We pulled up again at the switchback to get a drink, adjust jackets, etc. and get instuctions for the next leg.  "How far do you want us to go?" was the question.  My answer was "We've got this short switchback leg, so go ahead past that - up to the top corner going into Windy Pass, or the Jim Brooks cabin is just past the top if you want to go all the way there before I catch up".  The racers all nodded, and we started the serious climbing.  The racers were around the first corner before I could even see it.  About 50 yards before the turn, probably less than 1km from the lower corner, I pulled up, my pulse pounding, and leaned on my poles.  I had two radios in my pack, but had forgotten to give one to Elise to stay in contact.  "Oh well, they know to wait for me at the cabin" I thought.  I could hear some skis on the trail behind me so I started up again around the corner - I did not want to get caught and passed by touring skiers on backcountry classic gear!  After getting around the corner I had to pull up again.  After a few surges and stops I checked my pulse - 188bpm, well above the nominal maximum for a guy my age.

I took my jacket off and tied it around my waist, took a drink, and started up again.  Spiked over 180bpm almost immediately, even trying to keep a slow pace using diagonal V skate.  At this point the overtaking skiers started to arrive - a bunch of guys doing skate intervals on the upper switchback.  They all got by me at various points as I started and stopped and started again, and now I was checking my watch as the racers were undoubtedly waiting at least 15-20 minutes for me by now.

Peter Boveng came surging up the trail on his classic skis, and we had a brief "are you OK?" conversation.  Peter continued on up to check in on the racers and let them know I was having trouble and would have to turn around.  While I was still working my way up, Peter came back to tell me that the racers were OK with continuing around to Grand Junction and down the other side, and would meet me at the lodge.  I was a couple hundred yards away from the Windy Pass cut, so continued up to the 8km sign, then put my jacket and hat back on for the return trip.  There was no way I would be able to continue around and tackle the uphill climb on Ripsaw.

It had taken me 90 minutes to get to the top, almost an hour of that was the last 2km.  The return trip only took me 30 minutes, but I still had to stop twice in the last 2 km to catch my breath (on those dinky little uphills).  SNC club members Amy and Fang caught me just after I started down, and we skied together for most of the return.  We emerged at the trailhead just in time to see Hanne's red hat zig-zagging the last 100 yards down to the lodge, which I followed down in time to meet the 3 racers taking off their skis.

Any doubts about whether or not I can keep up over a longer distance with sustained climbing are dispelled - I cannot.  A rite of passage that brings a smile to my face every time it happens to me though.  I still remember Holly Brooks beating me on our Wed. Night Time Trial course for the first time when she was about the same age as Hanne, and beaming about it (it took her a little while longer to beat the other coaches, her Dad and Jeff Clark....).  Our racers are improving at a tremendous rate, and getting competitive with the larger JOQ field.  We have seen personal bests this year that are 2 to 5 minutes faster than last year over the same distances.  I couldn't be prouder of the entire team this year.

So remind me to pass out the radios before the next workout.  Way to go Racers!!

Bend JOQ Race Report

We had a great trip to Bend this past weekend for the Sunnyside Pursuit JOQ races, with four SNC Team racers making the trip.  The Mt. Bachelor courses are tough, with some of the highest elevation gains on our circuit, and with the start/finish area at about 6000 feet elevation.  With a couple new inches of snow Friday night, the courses were in great shape even with the low snowpack, and cold temperatures kept the tracks firm.  The SNC racers turned in some great times, and were competitive with the other clubs, a fantastic outing for a full-on early season qualifier.

cold racers on Saturday getting ready for the skate start
Here were the unofficial times for our SNC competitors:

Racer             Sat. Skate      Sun. Classic     Distance
Magnus             11:58              11:15              3km
Amelia              35:13              32:44              5km
RuthMabel        23:20              22:30              5km
Elise                  21:07              20:54              5km

Yes, you read that right - all the Classic times were faster than the Skate!  We had some great times, including a 5th place by Magnus on Sunday - only 20 seconds off the podium.

Saturday night there was a Taco Night dinner catered by Longboard Louie's restaurant, and it was a nice chance to meet some of the other teams, including racers from Australia and the Lake Tahoe area that came up for the races.  Looking forward to more good racing at the next JOQ weekend coming up in Leavenworth.  Here are a few more pictures to enjoy, and I'll see you all on Saturday.

Tim scores the best seat in the house

Amelia getting ready to throw down a good Classic time

it was in the low 20's both days at race time

New Season!!

Howdy racers,

Finally getting around to the first blog post for the new year.  We have had two early-season workouts already, a first for the SNC team.  We had 5 racers on 12/10 for our initial skate workout, and 4 on 12/17 for a classic workout.  Looks like we will have about 10 racers on the team this year, about half returning and half new members.

Several team families will be going to the Mazama Ski Rodeo on 12/31, but my family will not be going this year (combination of Shannon's broken foot and her mom's 80th birthday on 1/1/12).  So for those racers that will be "hanging around" the Seattle/Hyak area this year, I will try to set up a workout locally for 12/31 in the morning.  Watch for details on that to follow.

Our first January event is the first JOQ (Junior Olympic Qualifier) of the season, in Bend, OR.  We will be setting up accomodations for those looking to share with the coach, and a schedule of events.

Welcome, or Welcome Back, looking forward to a great season!

Bavarian Cup Videos from Jan 29/30

I've got the videos from the Bavarian Cup weekend uploaded to YouTube, here are the links:

3k Skate Race, start.

3k Skate Race, Hanne uphill

3k Skate Race, Emma and Louisa uphill

5k Skate Race, start

5k Skate Race, Elise, RuthMabel, Meg, uphill

5k Skate Race, Amelia uphill

3k Classic Race, Ben start

3k Classic Race, Hanne start

5k Classic Race start

5k Classic Race, RuthMabel and Elise, uphill

The V1 uphill shots all look pretty good - watch how everyone is stepping up the hill and making the early move to the recovery ski for the most part.  Feet are still a little wide in some cases, you can step forward over the front ski without swinging your feet wide - saves energy while on a climb.  Watch the Classic starts too, to see if you are collapsing on the double pole or driving the poles without sinking at the knees.

Nice racing, with almost the full team on Saturday - way to go Snoqualmie Nordic Team!

Kongsberger Classic Races

We lucked out on Saturday, with the feared rainshowers holding off until after we finished our post-race warmdown ski.  Nice job racers, as you will see from the timing analysis below, everyone improved over their previous year's time (when we only skied one lap instead of two).

Racer         2011 4k        2010 2k      (2010 4k est.)
Elise           23:01             n/a               n/a

Amelia M.   29:55            13:51           27:42  [but there was some skating last year :) ]
Emma         32:20             n/a               n/a

As you can see, with just doubling the time from last year and not considering any 2nd lap dropoff, everyone STILL beat their time from last year!  Way to go!

Mazama Ski Rodeo!

Howdy racers!

We had a great turnout in the Methow over New Years, with many team members and SNC friends in the valley. It seemed like every other person that Shannon and I saw on the trails or at the race was a friend from teaching or racing. We had some fun get togethers, including a New Years Eve potluck, a swim session at the River Run pool, two nights of Sticks 'n Pucks at the Winthrop ice rink (what a blast!), and of course ski outings and the race on Saturday morning. Congratulations to all the SNC racers, some of whom skied a full 9km on Friday and then raced 5km on Saturday!

Full results can be found at this link: http://www.mvsta.com/winter/results.html

5km race results for the SNC team were:
FJ3
1 330 Carolyn Lober Seattle 0:31:55
FJ2
1 319 Andi Zontek Wenatchee 0:16:56
2 315 Olivia Ekblad Winthrop 0:17:38
3 310 Elise Putnam Winthrop 0:17:56
4 322 Kealani Paton Cashmere 0:18:52
5 302 Meg Englert Seattle 0:25:31
6 306 RuthMabel Boytz Seattle 0:27:40
7 323 Amelia Miller Seattle 0:28:54
8 313 Sarah Lober Seattle 0:30:14
FJ1
1 307 Helen Miller Seattle 0:25:34
MM3/MM4
1 305 Paul Nelson Carnation 0:31:55

Everyone turned in a great effort and laid down some base times to shoot for over the rest of the season. It was cold, about +10F at race time, and the snow was a little slow and scratchy, but what a beautiful day for racing! We waxed up six pair of skis with blue glide wax the night before, and that helped get us a little better glide than we had the day before during the workout. I was very proud of all our racers, and also the family members that braved standing around in cold weather to ring cowbells, hold jackets, and take pictures!

There are lots more photos available at the MVSTA website, and we'll get a few more up on the blog later. Thanks for a great pre-season outing, and I'm looking forward to our official Week 1 workout this Saturday. Updated schedule post will be up later tonight (this morning?).

Pre-season ski get together on Dec. 18th

Howdy racers!

Let's get together for a pre-season ski workout/tour on Sat. 12/18. We can ski at the Hyak snopark or at the Summit Nordic trails, depending on what's open (probably the snopark, since the chair will not be running yet - unless the rain this weekend wrecks the track at the snopark).

Food/videos/equipment-care/fun later on at our cabin in Alpental.

Email to follow, let me know if you can make it up! Time TBD, probably 9am or 10am?

email is paul2tele@yahoo.com

2011 Season!!

It's late June October, and time to get serious panic about the upcoming ski season.

It's been a busy year for me, and I am looking forward to "getting back to normal" with the SNC Race Team this year. The attached event calendar will give you an idea of the schedule, with plenty of race events both near (Cabin Creek) and far (Bend).

There are three Junior Olympic Qualifier (JOQ) races in the division this year, and I plan to travel to all three if there are racers interested in competing. They are well spaced on the calendar, and offer an excellent chance to participate with the other division clubs in some first-class competitive and festive events. JOQ weekends are:

Jan. 8/9 Bend, OR
Feb. 5/6 Winthrop, WA
Feb. 19/20 Cabin Creek, Snoq. Pass WA

The JOQ races are GREAT events, and offer a chance to ski with and against some of the best skiers in the Northwest - that includes YOU! There are also several "local" races at Cabin Creek and Leavenworth that we can participate in.

The (more or less) complete event calendar looks like this:

Possible Club/Team trips might include:

- Silver Star at Thanksgiving ** update, doesn't look like I'll be there **
- Methow between Xmas and New Year's (Ski Rodeo is on 1/1/11, I'll be there 12/29-1/2).
- Bend JOQ on Jan. 8/9
- Skirennen on Jan. 15 - Leavenworth Golf Course
- Gunnar Hagen classic race on Jan. 16 - Cabin Creek
- Jenteloppet on Jan. 23 - Hyak/IronHorse?
- Bavarian Cup on Jan. 29/30 (overnight in Leavenworth?)
- Methow JOQ on Feb. 5/6
- Chicks on Sticks on Feb. 6 - Leavenworth Fish Hatchery
- Kongsberger JOQ on Feb. 19/20 (overnight at WAC, our chalet?)
- J3 Championships at Whitefish, MT on Feb. 26/27
- wouldn't it be great is someone qualified for JO's in Minnesota??!!

More to come on program details, uniforms, and ski gear - watch this space!

Chicks on Sticks preliminary results and report

Well, wasn't that fun!!!

Official results are not posted yet, but I have some estimates based on accurate first lap splits, and estimated finish times (I have Robin finishing as the sweeper in a total time of 44:08, so everyone beat the 45 minute mark!).  My map software doesn't show the river, but my crude first attempt at measuring the course comes out at 3.5km per lap.  So these are GREAT TIMES for a 7km race, and on par with the times we saw at the Ski Hill trails a month ago for just 5km.  Here's what my estimates look like:

Racer Lap One Lap Two Total

Galen 0:12:05 0:13:22 0:25:27

Elise 0:12:37 0:14:53 0:27:30

Meg 0:13:30 0:16:00 0:29:30

RuthMabel 0:16:40 0:17:10 0:33:50

Emma 0:19:10 0:20:05 0:39:15

Amelia 0:20:08 0:23:56 0:44:04

Robin 0:20:10 0:23:58 0:44:08

On a flat course like this, you can see how important it is to have good V2 and V2alt technique so you can get efficient long glide at a decent pace, but without running out of steam.  Keep thinking about getting the poles lined up down the track, instead of out to the sides - you want all the effort going in the direction of travel.

Next week at Cabin Creek will be another 5km freestyle race, we skied the first half of the loop at the classic race in January, so we all know that portion.  The rest of the course is similar, and the 5km distance is one lap.  Total elevation profile will be similar to the Leavenworth Ski Hill course.  We'll work on some V1 before the race during our warmup.  Pre-race blog post will go up on Thursday.  I'll try to get some of the video I've taken posted during the week.

Photos are up on Picasa at: http://picasaweb.google.com/paul2tele/ChicksOnSticks2010#

Don't forget to watch for Holly at the Olympics!  You could all be there someday too!

Chicks on Sticks this Saturday

Details for the race on Saturday at Leavenworth: http://www.skileavenworth.com/event/chicks

Let's meet at the registration area at 8:30am (I'll be shooting to get there at 8:00).  We'll need to pick up bibs and get out on the trails for a preview and warmup.  The course is on the Fish Hatchery portion of the Icicle Creek trails, which is nearly dead-flat.  We'll all be skating, unless someone just HAS to do classic.  This will be an 8K race, which will likely take us between 45 minutes to an hour.  This is a great distance to work on pacing and trying to keep good V2 and V2alt technique together over a longer ski time.  Just remember that the Mt. Catherine Loop is a longer, more difficult ski, and we've all done that just fine!  Plan to ski with a water bottle or camelback, and we'll see about coordinating water/snacks near the lap/finish area for those not carrying with them.

By my count, we have seven racers participating, and I think you're all staying over in Leavenworth on Friday night (?): Galen, Amelia B., Amelia M., Elise, Emma, Meg, and RuthMabel.

This is a Women-only event, so I won't be able to sweep this week, or next week either.  But I will be moving around the edges of the course a bit to offer encouragement and pester you (depending on your point of view), and hopefully get some more good video that we can break down later.

The weather forecast looks good, overcast and above freezing - probably in the mid-30s at race time.  So red/pink glide wax again for anyone fine-tuning their skis tomorrow night.

I can't wait!

Cabin Creek videos from 1/23

I can't for the life of me figure out how to post videos to the blog page (yeah, I know I managed to do it on my VERY FIRST POST...button seems to be missing now - maddening).  So, it's YouTube time!

Here is the double pole drill.  We're looking for good forward lean at initiation, driving the poles into the snow and through with an agressive move, starting with the abdominal crunch, proper pole angle, follow through, flat back at finish, recovery and smooth transition to the next stroke.
Double Pole Drill 1/23/10

And the striding drill.  We're looking for kick DOWN (not back) good reach and forward lean to the gliding ski, balancing on each new ski, proper pole angle, and delayed pole timing to get the 4-count.

Gunnar Hagen race report

We had a great time last Saturday at the Kongsberger Ski Club hosted classic races!  The weather held off, and when the groomer made his pre-race pass over the course we had perfect classic track conditions.  We started the day with some technique work on double-poling and stride timing, and were able to preview the course during our warmup.  After lunch we were ready to go!  Despite a slight mishap at the start line, everyone did great!  I forgot to re-iterate that there is NO SKATING in a classic race (sorry Amelia!), but no harm done.  Kudos to Amelia Brown for skiing the entire race with a twisted ankle after the start-line crash.  I was very proud of everyone's effort, and we saw some great results (and here they are...):

Updated schedule for the next 3 weeks

Here is our updated schedule (I will also be editing the original schedule posting to match):

Jan. 30th - team workout at the Summit Nordic Center (Hyak) - meet in the lodge at 9:30am, bring both skate and classic gear.  We will be starting on skate gear on the upper trails, unless conditions warrant a change.

Feb. 6th - Chicks on Sticks race in Leavenworth (8km skate) Event details and registration:
http://www.skileavenworth.com/event/chicks
This will be a great opportunity to ski a slightly longer distance race, on a relatively flat course that will allow us to focus on technique and pacing.

Feb. 13th - Jente Loppet race at Cabin Creek (5km skate) Event details and registration:
http://www.kongsbergers.org/Jente%202010a.html
There is also a 10km option for older kids who want to do two laps instead of one.

See you all on Saturday!

Holly makes it!

Holly Brooks was added to the US Olympic Team yesterday, and is on her way to Canmore for world cup racing this Friday and training for the Olympics.  Woo Hoo!  No word yet on which events she might be skiing in, but as an all-distance performer this season she could be on the start list for any/all events.
